Dean's Awards

The law school recognizes that leadership and service can and do take many forms. The Dean's Awards are designed to recognize students who have a demonstrated record of law school leadership in co-curricular activities, student organizations, and/or public service originating within the law school.

All applicants must be School of Law degree candidates, in good academic standing, who have completed one year of law school.1 Transfer students who have completed one year at this law school may apply. Visiting and guest students are not eligible.

For the 2008-2009 academic year, the law school expects to be able to offer a total of 25 Dean's Awards. Typically, the award level for a day student is $5,000 and $3,750 for an evening student for the academic year. Awards will not be renewed automatically, but recipients may apply in successive years. Day students may receive awards for no more than two years and evening and part-time day students may receive awards for no more than three years.

Decisions concerning award recipients will be made during the summer, after spring semester grades have been posted. Awards will be applied equally between the fall and spring semester and credited directly to the students' law school account.2 Based on your overall budget, any overages will be refunded to the student. Students may not use their award for payment of tuition or other expenses in conjunction with attendance at an institution other than the University of Maryland School of Law. A student on an approved leave of absence will have any unused award credited upon return to the School of Law.

Students who are selected as Dean's Award recipients will be expected to continue to remain in good academic standing, to remain enrolled during the academic year for which they received an award and to continue to participate in leadership activities with student organizations and/or public service endeavors. Furthermore, recipients may be required to participate in stewardship events to thank the generous donors who have made these inaugural Dean's Awards possible.

The Award application is due to the Office of Student Affairs (Suite 280 or

osa @ law.umaryland.edu
) by Friday, June 6th.

1 Students who received grant/scholarship awards of at least $5,000 in a single year are not eligible to participate in this program. (Loan funds will not count against your eligibility.)

2 Any amount which together with the student's financial aid award is more than the student's demonstrated need may require that the student's financial aid award be reduced.
