The Honorees

This year’s Distinguished Graduate Award recipient, Paul Bekman ’71, a partner at Salsbury, Clements, Bekman, Marder & Adkins, LLC, has demonstrated service to the community and law school, and has served as a role model for students and young attorneys. Bekman, a nationally respected trial attorney, has provided remarkable leadership to the Law School as Chair of the Board of Visitors and former co-chair of the School of Law Building Campaign. He also generously endowed the Bekman Scholarship, which has provided significant support to highly qualified and committed law students since its establishment in 2006.

This year’s Benjamin L. Cardin Public Service Award recipient, Judge Joseph Murphy ’69, has served on the state trial bench for 25 years. In 2007, Judge Murphy was appointed to the Second Appellate Circuit of the Maryland Court of Appeals after having served on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals and the Third Judicial Circuit of the Baltimore County Circuit Court. Judge Murphy has vast experience in the legal profession, and has taught trial practice at the School of Law for nearly 30 years.

This year’s special presentation of the Star Award will be presented to Mary Katherine Scheeler ’53 to recognize her for her lifetime contributions to the Law School and the greater community. As a member of the Law School’s Board of Visitors, Scheeler has provided substantial support to the Law School for more than a decade. Formerly a Baltimore City teacher and appointed member of the Baltimore County School Board, she is now a practicing attorney specializing in wills and estate law. Her contributions to the greater community include leadership on a wide array of charitable and cultural boards.
