This course will examine the early law practice of Thurgood Marshall. The Spring 2011 class will focus on state and federal lawsuits brought by Marshall in 1936-1941 that ended racial discrimination in the salaries paid to public school teachers. This is a research seminar that will give special attention to primary sources, including trial court filings and exhibits, court docket entries, hearing transcripts, pre-litigation administrative proceedings, contemporaneous correspondence and reports, and press accounts.
