This seminar focuses on federal campus safety laws addressing sexual violence and harassment in education settings. Specifically, the course will (1) take an in-depth view of Title IX’s prohibition of sexual violence as a form of sex discrimination; (2) review the Clery Act’s requirements to prevent and addresses sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking in higher education; (3) explore evolving due process and fair proceeding requirements for students accused of sexual violence in educational hearings; and (4) address privacy protects over institutional disciplinary hearings as provided for by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This seminar also will incorporate guest speakers to discuss current policy and prevention education trends in K-12 and higher education to address sexual violence and harassment.
