Community Development Clinic (4/4 TO 7)
Formerly the Economic Housing and Community Development Clinic, student attorneys in this clinical course represent nonprofit and community based organizations engaging in community redevelopment. As counsel, students aid clients in a variety of matters, including entity formation and operation, development of affordable housing and compatible real estate development activities, and economic development. Most clients are located in Baltimore City, but some are in suburban and rural Maryland. Clients have varying degrees of development capacity and include experienced community development corporations, affordable housing development organizations, church-based development organizations, family support agencies, youth development organizations, block and neighborhood associations, and emerging organizations. Student attorneys have significant opportunity to work with clients to engage in legal problem solving through client counseling, the preparation of advice letters and a variety of documents and contracts; as well as to assist underserved communities to navigate the numerous fields of law that make 'community development' so challenging. This clinic satisfies the Cardin Requirement.
Students who enroll in this course are required to attend a full, one day Law Practice Orientation Program.
