This seminar will explore the legal doctrines that govern relationships among children, parents and the state. Topics to be covered include the constitutional parameters of family decision-making, the first amendment rights of students, the child welfare system, adoption and foster care, and reproductive technology. Students will be expected to complete a substantial seminar paper, which may be used to satisfy the Advanced Writing Requirement. There are no prerequisites, but previous or concurrent exposure to family law is recommended.
