Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association Marks 30th Anniversary of Historic Marvin Mandel Trials on Oct. 12 at the School of Law

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Marvin Mandel Trials, the Maryland chapter of the Federal Bar Association is sponsoring an all-star panel of lawyers, judges, lobbyists, and commentators to examine various aspects of the 1977 trial, including its impact on law, politics, and journalism. "Thirty Years Later: How the Mandel Trials Changed Maryland and the Country" will be held at the School of Law on Friday, October 12 from 1Ė4:30 p.m.

Thirty years ago, Maryland made legal history for the trials of sitting Governor Marvin Mandel on federal mail fraud and racketeering charges stemming from alleged bribery and corruption. These events, followed by the commutation of Governor Mandelís sentence and the later vacation of his conviction, made a substantial impact on Marylandís political, legal and media history, and the results changed the way political corruption is investigated and prosecuted around the country.

Among those who have agreed to participate is Andrea Mitchell, Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News. Ms. Mitchell covered the trial and its aftermath, both as a local reporter for Channel 9 in Washington and as a national correspondent for NBC News. Barry Rascovar, columnist for The Gazette of Politics and Business and a commentator for WYPRís "Inside Maryland Politics" is also scheduled to participate. In addition, the program will feature many of the attorneys who were involved with the trials or subsequent appeals and proceedings, several prominent Annapolis lobbyists and other distinguished guests, including:
