Environmental Law Students Present Films In Shanghai

On March 21 Maryland law students Chris Remavege  (3E) and Taylor Lilley (2L) presented environmental films to a group of students and faculty at New York University’s campus in Shanghai, China.  Each student was part of a group that made one of the top films from among seven produced by students in Professor Percival’s fall 2016 Environmental Law class.  Chris’s film, which won this year’s “Best Picture” golden tree award, is “Glass Half Full: Sustainable Vineyards.”  It examins how wineries are trying to reduce their carbon footprints. Taylor’s film, the runner-up for best picture, is “A World in Retreat.”   It focuses on how coastal communities are coping with rising sea levels caused by global warming.

Since 2002 more than 100 films have been made by students in Professor Percival’s class.  As part of the Shanghai program, Professor Percival described the history of film-making in his class and showed short excerpts from several of the most creative films that have been made over the years.  These films included a clean coal parody, efforts to reduce nutrients affecting the Chesapeake Bay, films using claymation and Lego animations and a Twilight Zone-themed film about controlling the environmental impact of individual consumption patterns.  Eighty-three of the films that have been made in Percival’s class between 2002 and 2017 can be viewed online at: http://digitalcommons.law.umaryland.edu/envirofilms.
