Dean Haddon Named Chancellor of Rutgers-Camden
UM Carey Law Dean Phoebe Haddon has been named chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden, Rutgers University President Robert Barchi announced April 23. Haddon will assume her new position July 1.
“Phoebe is a brilliant scholar and gifted administrator with a sophisticated understanding of the strategic issues facing higher education,” Barchi said. “We are proud that she will lead Rutgers University-Camden.”
As chancellor of Rutgers-Camden, Haddon will head a public university of 6,350 students enrolled in 35 undergraduate and 18 graduate programs, including South Jersey’s only law school. Rutgers-Camden is known as a rapidly emerging national model of a civically engaged urban university.
“It is an honor to be given the opportunity to lead an institution as engaged, diverse and public-minded as Rutgers-Camden,” Dean Haddon said. “This is an outstanding university that has already demonstrated its commitment to public values and civic engagement. I’m proud to continue that tradition and will work tirelessly on behalf of the campus and community.”
Haddon joined UM Carey Law as dean in 2009. She was instrumental in securing a $30 million gift to the law school from the W.P. Carey Foundation—the largest gift in the law school’s history and one of the largest to the University System of Maryland.
Calling her deanship one of the "most challenging, valuable and productive experiences of my professional life," Haddon said she "will be forever grateful" to the UM Carey Law community for its "insight and encouragement."
During her five-year deanship, Haddon has recruited and retained nationally recognized faculty while also increasing student scholarships and the diversity of the student body. Under her leadership, UM Carey Law has been home to top, nationally ranked programs in health, environmental and clinical law. She has also fostered innovation, including the creation of a strategic partnership with the University of Maryland at College Park to establish a Master of Science in Law program for working professionals.
