Maryland Carey Law Mourns the Passing of Peter Worthington

A member of our law school community, third year student Peter Worthington, and four others tragically lost their lives in a plane crash on December 24.

Dean Donald Tobinís statement, sent to students, faculty, and staff the night of the accident, is reproduced below.

As many of you have heard, a member of our community, Peter Worthington (3L) died today in a tragic plane crash.† All of our information comes from press reports, but Peter was on a private plane with his wife, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and a family friend.† The plane crashed in Florida and everyone on the plane died in the accident.

Words cannot express the sadness we all feel with the loss of a member of our community.† It is especially tragic when the death involves young people with tremendous potential. †Our thoughts and prayers go out to Peterís family and friends, as well as the friends and family of the people who died in this terrible crash.

Please know that we are here to support members of the community while they grieve.† You are welcome to reach out to me, Susan Krinsky, Michele Hayes and other members of the community if you need help and support.† I can be reached at dtobin@law.umaryland.edu†and am available during the break.† The Student Counseling Center (SCC) is also available at 410-328-8404.† The web address is†http://www.umaryland.edu/counseling/.† The counseling center is closed until January 2nd†but the Student Health Center provides coverage when the SCC is closed. †Student Health can be reached at 667-214-1899.† There is an on-call provider available 24/7.

When school returns, we will find ways to mourn Peterís passing and reflect on the impact he has had on the community and those around him.† I have already received wonderful memories and thoughts about Peter from members of our community. †To those of you in the school who knew Peter best, I welcome your thoughts on how we can best remember him.† At times like these, I am reminded about how important we all are to each other.† Please keep Peter in your hearts and in your thoughts.

The Baltimore Sun's obituary can be found here.

A memorial service for Pete and Tori will take place at McDonogh School, 8600 McDonogh Road, Owings Mills, MD.† All are welcome, and this is the community wide memorial service.†The service will be†on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. with a reception in the Library of Allen Building.†Followed by a 2:00 p.m. memorial service in the Ceres Horn Theater. Condolences may be sent to the family at†www.heathfuneralchapel.com
